Police in Mumbai have arrested a 23-year-old man on the charge of throwing his nine-month-old son from a skywalk near Ghatkopar railway station. Police said the incident took place on Sunday night after an argument with his wife.
The child has been named as Aarav. He suffered serious injuries. With the help of people living nearby, he was first taken to Rajawadi Hospital. As his condition was serious, he was later shifted to Sion Hospital for further treatment. The child is reportedly being treated in the intensive care unit.
The incident allegedly took place at around 10 pm near Ghatkopar East railway station. The child's mother, Aarti Zafar Sheikh, 22, was standing on the skywalk with the child. Her husband, Zafar Sheikh, then came there and allegedly began arguing with her.
According to the complaint, Zafar tried to take the child away with him.
The couple married about two years ago, and the family lives in the Sarvodaya Nagar area of Ghatkopar. Zafar reportedly runs a clothing business in the same area. The two had reportedly been quarrelling frequently at home for the past few months. The quarrels were allegedly linked to Zafar's use of drugs.
After the incident, Ghatkopar police registered a case on Aarti's complaint and arrested the accused. The investigation is on. Further information is awaited on the probe and on the child's medical condition.
