The Thane Municipal Corporation has stepped up recovery of unpaid property tax, with notices, attachment proceedings, water disconnections and sealing of properties.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has intensified action against those who have not paid their property tax dues. According to a statement issued by the civic body on Wednesday, notices have been served on 6,580 property owners, while attachment proceedings have been started against 286 properties.
As part of the recovery drive, the corporation has cut the water connections of 73 properties. In addition, 126 properties have been sealed or barred from use.
The TMC's property tax department is carrying out the action on the directions of Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao. The drive is on after the property tax bills for the financial year 2026-27 were distributed. The corporation said many taxpayers have paid their tax, but some property owners have not yet cleared their dues.
Recovery action is under way against defaulters whose cases fall within the scope of action under the relevant law. Teams led by assistant commissioners have been formed in different wards to speed up recovery.
The civic administration has appealed to property owners with outstanding tax to pay up at the earliest so that further action can be avoided. According to the statement, the appeal is also meant to prevent any untoward incident during recovery action.
To make payment easier, the TMC has offered several online options. Property owners can pay on the corporation's property tax website, propertytax.thanecity.gov.in. Payment can also be made through Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, the BHIM app, QR codes and a WhatsApp chatbot.
Commissioner Rao has appealed to residents to pay their outstanding property tax and cooperate with the corporation.
In April, the TMC issued the property tax bills for 2026-27. From April 1, taxpayers began receiving the bills through SMS links, which let them view and pay the bills online. Printed copies of the bills were also distributed. The initiative was meant to make payment easier and improve the habit of paying tax across the city.
To encourage timely payment, the corporation had also announced a phased rebate structure. It was available to taxpayers who paid the full property tax for 2026-27, including arrears, within the stipulated period. The rebate applied to the general tax component of the second half of the financial year. The announced rates were 10 per cent for payment up to June 15, 4 per cent between June 16 and 30, 3 per cent between July 1 and 31, and 2 per cent between August 1 and 31, 2026.
