The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, has cancelled its annual Deepotsav at Shivaji Park in Mumbai this Diwali. The decision was taken in view of the drought conditions in several parts of Maharashtra.
The party has decided that, instead of the lights and celebrations of the festival, it will focus on helping people in drought-affected areas. The traditional festival of lights will not be held at Shivaji Park, and the party's attention will be on people facing water shortages and several other hardships in these areas.
The decision comes at a time of severe deficiency of rain and mounting difficulties for farmers across the state. Maharashtra has declared drought in several talukas. Affected communities are worried about crop losses, and about the availability of drinking water and fodder for animals.
Raj Thackeray recently met MNS office-bearers to review the situation in rural Maharashtra. After the meeting, he announced that he plans to visit drought-affected areas after Diwali.
He has also directed party representatives to help farmers and arrange fodder for animals.
The Deepotsav held at Shivaji Park every year is a special Diwali event organised by the MNS in Mumbai. By cancelling this year's celebration, the party is turning its focus to relief work for communities struggling with the effects of the drought.
