The southern staircase of the second northern foot overbridge connecting platforms 2 and 3 at Mira Road railway station has been closed to passengers with immediate effect. Passengers can no longer use the staircase. The decision was taken because of improvement work under way at the station.

According to an official statement issued by Western Railway, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is carrying out the improvement work at Mira Road station. As part of the work, MRVC will demolish the southern staircase of the foot overbridge, which made it necessary to keep it closed to passengers.

Western Railway has informed passengers of the closure and expressed regret for the inconvenience the work will cause. Those travelling through Mira Road station have been asked to note the closure and plan their movement inside the station accordingly.

Separately, on Saturday, October 24, Western Railway conducted 371 drinking water quality tests at eight locations in a single day. The railway said the results of all the tests were satisfactory, meaning the water was found fit in every test.

The tests were carried out as part of the railway department's routine water quality monitoring programme, to check the safety of drinking water supplied within railway premises and to maintain hygiene standards for passengers and staff. Of the 371 tests, 335 were for residual chlorine and 36 were bacteriological. Western Railway said the parameters tested showed 100 per cent compliance.

The tests were conducted at eight locations and divisions on the Western Railway network, including Jagjivan Ram Hospital, Mumbai Central, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Ratlam, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Dahod. It is part of the regular monitoring measures used to check drinking water quality at railway facilities.

The residual chlorine test shows whether treated water retains enough chlorine to protect against microorganisms. The bacteriological test checks whether the water has been contaminated by harmful microorganisms and whether it meets the relevant safety standards.

The railway's statement does not give the actual figures for each test, the detailed criteria applied, or the methods used to collect and examine the samples. So although the railway has said all results were satisfactory, the statement does not show the finer details behind them.
