The Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA) is holding an inter-school table tennis tournament at Dreams Sports in Worli. While a league-cum-knockout round match in the boys' under-16 category was on, parents stood outside the arena watching the children.
A Family Beach Drum Circle will be held at Juhu beach this November. SAHA, an organisation that stands by neurodiverse and underprivileged groups, will take part in the initiative along with Drum Connect. Families have been invited to celebrate inclusion through music. "Everyone should feel that we are together," said co-founder Aarti Parikh. More information is available at @saha_togetherness.
It would be no exaggeration to call historian William Dalrymple the biggest name on the literary festival circuit today. Yet he seems quite proud that his son Sam Dalrymple is emerging on the same circuit. At the Sikkim Arts and Literature Festival, in a session with poet Tashi Chophel on the first day, William went beyond his allotted time. He told vivid stories of being arrested several times at 21 while travelling the Golden Road in the footsteps of Marco Polo.
The columnist later met Dalrymple Senior. The conversation with Sam earlier this year had to be raised. "These days everyone knows me as the father of Sam," the historian said with a laugh, and added: "Arabs would call me Abu el Sami. I am very happy about it." The talent clearly runs in the family.
There are two special reasons to look at the photographs in the recently released Pirelli Calendar 2027. There was excitement from the start that the calendar's theme revolves around India. Within it, Avani Rai's tribute to her late father Raghu Rai was moving. The assignment had originally been given to Norwegian photographer Sølve Sundsbø and the veteran Raghu Rai. After her father died in April this year, Avani took on the responsibility ably. This year's theme is India: Beyond a Single Gaze. Those familiar with Rai's work will find the theme fitting for his nature. The calendar's photographs can be viewed at pirellicalendar.pirelli.com.
At the Nehru Science Centre, old wires and electronic scrap have been given new life as a lizard sculpture. A horse made from an electronic coil and footwear made from e-waste are also on display. The Ministry of Culture's cleanliness campaign is in its sixth year this year. It promotes upcycling through creative reuse. "We want people to see waste as a resource and build a livelihood through creativity," Subhashankar Ghosh, director of the centre, told the columnist.
