A Harbour line train in Mumbai has a second-class coach fitted with first-class-style cushioned seats, and a video of it is drawing attention online.
Heavy crowding on Mumbai's local trains is nothing new. Every day commuters rush to catch their regular train, and if they miss it the whole schedule goes awry, besides the packed coaches.
To avoid the crowds, many passengers travel first class. A first-class ticket costs more than a second-class one, but the coaches are somewhat less crowded. Passengers therefore prefer to pay a little extra for a more comfortable journey.
But do you know of a local that offers first-class comfort at a lower fare? One train on Mumbai's tracks has a second-class coach with cushioned seats like those in first class. Passengers holding a second-class ticket can sit on a cushioned seat and travel in comfort. It may be hard to believe, but a video of it is now going strongly viral. The second-class ticket price is said to be Rs 5.
The train runs on Mumbai's Harbour line. Coach number 1020 B is placed ahead of the luggage compartment numbered 2133C. The coach offers first-class-like facilities. It is a second-class coach, yet it has cushioned seats. Second-class coaches on Mumbai locals generally have seats made of iron strips.
The build of one coach of this train differs from the others. For this reason passengers with second-class tickets can sit on cushioned seats. It is said to be the only train in the entire Mumbai local network to have such a coach.
The train leaves from platform number 1 or 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and ends its run at Panvel. Passengers travelling on it can enjoy a comfortable journey on a cushioned seat with just a second-class ticket.
