Zomato's Deepinder Goyal tests brain blood flow chip on his forehead
Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal shared results of wearing the Temple chip, a device that tracks blood flow changes in the brain
A photo of Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal is currently being discussed online. In the photo, he is seen wearing a chip on his head. The Temple chip, a device still under research, is used to understand changes in blood flow in the brain. Goyal posted on his X (Twitter) account that the device could be used to diagnose conditions such as brain tumours, stroke and other illnesses at the earliest stage.
In his post, Goyal wrote that this was his second verification study of the Temple chip. In this second study, he compared the Temple chip's brain flow readings with time-domain NIRS, a technology he said is among the few that can distinguish between changes in scalp blood volume and changes in brain blood volume. The test was carried out on nearly 60 people. Movements performed during the test included bending the head down, standing up and sitting down, and lying down on the back from a standing position.
In the test, brain flow readings were measured with a blood flow correlation ranging from 84 to 91. The most notable result came from the head-bending stage, where the Temple chip's correlation with the brain was recorded at 91, while its correlation with the scalp was only 49.
According to Goyal's post, cerebral blood flow, the brain's main blood flow, responds to almost everything that people trying to improve longevity are already doing. It increases with aerobic exercise and is directly linked to VO2max. It also increases with cold exposure and meditation. Good sleep helps it, while prolonged sitting and dehydration reduce it. The post said this is one of the most sensitive and integrated biomarkers of how well the body is actually functioning and how fast it is ageing.
The Temple chip is not worn on the wrist but is placed on one side of the forehead. It looks roughly like a smartwatch, but instead of only measuring heart rate or step count, it tracks brain blood flow and the body's metabolic demand in real time. Its market price is likely to be in the range of Rs 72,000 to Rs 80,000.
