Salman Ayub Khan was declared dead at a Pardi hospital after his foot slipped and he was caught in a trommel machine at the SUSBDE plant on Bidgaon Road.
A 28-year-old worker died in an accident at a waste segregation plant in Nagpur's Wathoda area. The accident took place on Tuesday morning at the SUSBDE company's plant on Bidgaon Road.
The deceased has been identified as Salman Ayub Khan, who lived in Antujinagar in Bhandewadi. According to the information available, Khan climbed onto the plant's trommel machine around 7.30 am on Tuesday with fellow worker Akshay Belkar to clean waste off it. As the cleaning was under way, his foot suddenly slipped and he got caught in the machine. He suffered serious injuries.
Company employees and Khan's relatives immediately took him to Bhavani Hospital in Pardi. However, doctors declared him dead before treatment could begin. The body was then sent to the medical hospital for a post-mortem.
As news of the incident spread, panic broke out in the plant area. The deceased's relatives and people present there expressed anger. Given the situation, company officials spoke to the family and assured them of fair compensation.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has handed over waste segregation work in the city to SUSBDE. The accident at the plant has once again raised the question of worker safety. People are asking whether the necessary safety equipment was available while the machine was being cleaned. Questions are also being raised over whether the work was being done with the machine switched off, and whether workers had been given the necessary training and safety gear.
Meanwhile, on a complaint from Khan's father, Ayub Khan, Wathoda police have begun the process of registering a case of accidental death. Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident and are also examining whether safety rules were being followed at the plant.
