Nagpur: A young man is paying for testifying in a murder case by putting his life at risk. Lal Singh Patel, 27, a witness in the Dilip Sahu murder case in Beltarodi, was attacked with sticks and sharp weapons in a life-threatening assault. His family members and residents of the settlement who came to save him were also threatened with death by men brandishing swords. Fear grips the Kaikadi Nagar slum area under Beltarodi police station after the incident.
Police have arrested Omprakash Kishor Papde (22), Piyush Sundar Lilhare (22), Akash Sukhdev Lilhare (24), Gajanan Damlal Suryawanshi (27) and Sanjay Ramvilas Verma (23), and registered a case of attempt to murder.
Dilip Sahu was murdered in the Kaikadi Nagar slum two years ago. Lal Singh Patel is a witness in the case, while Omprakash, Piyush and Akash are accused in it. The three were in jail after their arrest and came out on bail about six months ago. Since their release, Lal Singh had been targeted. The accused would abuse him and threaten to kill him. On the night of October 19, the accused reached Lal Singh's house and began abusing him. When Lal Singh objected, they turned violent and attacked him with sticks and sharp weapons. Lal Singh was seriously injured in the sudden attack.
Lal Singh's parents, brother and residents of the settlement rushed to help when they saw him being attacked, but the accused did not spare them either. The attackers brandished swords in the air and threatened to kill anyone who came between them. People were terrified by the open display of weapons, and the accused fled the spot while continuing to issue threats. The injured Lal Singh was taken to hospital, where he is being treated at the medical hospital.
The attack on a man who testified in a murder case has raised serious questions about the safety of witnesses. Local residents allege that criminal incidents are rising in the Beltarodi police station area and that fear of the law appears to be waning among criminals. The incident of threatening people by brandishing weapons in the settlement has heightened public concern. Beltarodi police have registered a case of attempt to murder and begun an investigation. The police now face the challenge of taking effective action against the accused and ensuring the witness's safety.
