WhatsApp tests Restricted Chat to block exports, Meta AI and linked-device access
Meta's messaging platform is testing a feature that lets users stop the other person in a chat from exporting it, saving media or using Meta AI.
WhatsApp, Meta's instant messaging platform, keeps adding new features to improve the user experience. The company is now testing another one. It will let users block chat export, the use of Meta AI and automatic media download. Users will also be able to block access to their chats on linked devices.
The company is preparing to rename its older Advanced Chat Privacy feature, which may now be offered as Restricted Chat. A limitation tied to the primary device is also being added. The company is said to have decided on the new name to clear up confusion among users. The change has been rolled out for now to a select group of beta users.
The feature may appear on the chat info screen. For a chat with one person, it will place four kinds of restrictions. The other person in the chat will not be able to save the chat's media automatically on their phone. The option to export the chat can also be blocked for them. The other person will also not be able to use Meta AI during the chat.
Most importantly, the other user will not be able to use a linked device, such as WhatsApp Web or a tablet, to access your chats. Users will also get an option to bar unauthorised clients or AI agents from being used to access conversations.
Some unauthorised tools typically depend on linked devices to access conversations. Once the company switches the feature on, the messages in the chat will stay limited to the primary devices of both users.
It has also emerged that the platform is working on a new, simpler look for the bottom navigation bar. It will have no text labels, which could make it look like an iPhone. The company has also recently introduced parental controls for teenagers' accounts on the platform. These are meant to keep children safe and limit access, so that they can use the platform in a safe environment.
