The local crime branch in Wardha has detained a woman accused of stealing gold ornaments from jewellery shops in Wardha city through sleight of hand. The woman would pose as a customer at jewellery shops and steal gold tops while distracting shopkeepers. Police seized gold worth about Rs 59,600 from the accused woman, and the investigation led to the solving of two theft cases.

According to police, complaints had been received about gold tops being stolen from jewellery shops in Wardha city. After noticing gold going missing from their shops, the jewellers concerned had approached the police. Based on these complaints, a case was registered at Wardha city police station, after which the local crime branch took up the investigation.

During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage from the shops and took the help of technical analysis. Based on this, police began tracing the suspect and learnt during the probe that the suspected woman was in Hinganghat. A team from the local crime branch then went to Hinganghat and detained the woman, identified as Sheikh Rumana alias Shabana alias Muskan Sheikh Arif (29).

During police questioning, the accused woman admitted to stealing gold tops from jewellery shops in Wardha city. It also emerged during questioning that she had not kept the stolen ornaments with herself but had pawned them with jewellers in Hinganghat. While pawning the ornaments, she had told the jewellers concerned that her daughter was ill and she needed money for her treatment, police said.

Police have seized gold tops weighing 1.630 grams and 2.620 grams from the accused woman. Both tops had been pawned by her with jewellers in Hinganghat, from where they were recovered. Police said the total value of the seized gold is about Rs 59,600.

This action by the local crime branch has led to the solving of two theft cases registered in Wardha city. The investigation has established that the same woman was behind both the offences. Police are conducting further investigation into the case.
