Demand for compact SUVs is rising in the Indian car market. Seeing this, Volkswagen has prepared to bring a new sub-4 metre SUV in 2027. After production of the Polo ended in 2022, this could be the company's first car in the segment of vehicles shorter than 4 metres. Following the success of the Skoda Kylaq, the Volkswagen Group has also decided to strengthen its position in this segment. However, the name and launch date of the new SUV have not yet been announced.

The SUV is likely to be engineered on a smaller version of the MQB A0 IN platform used in the Volkswagen Taigun. The vehicle will be under 4 metres in length, and could be about 1.8 metres wide and nearly 1.6 metres tall. The wheelbase is estimated at about 2.6 metres. This suggests the company may focus on keeping the size compact while offering enough space in the cabin.

In design, this Volkswagen SUV is expected to look different from the Skoda Kylaq. It could get distinct styling in the front grille, headlamps, tail-lamps, bumpers and 17-inch alloy wheels. The dashboard, centre console, door panels and seats in the cabin are also likely to be designed differently. A GT-Line variant could also arrive for customers who like a sporty look, with some exterior and cabin parts expected to get a dark finish.

On the engine, it could get a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. This engine is estimated to produce 114 bhp of power and 178 Nm of torque. A 6-speed manual and an automatic gearbox could be offered. Power is likely to go to the front wheels with both gearboxes. Mileage could be about 19 km/l, but this figure has not yet been officially confirmed.

The Skoda Kylaq has created a good opportunity for the Volkswagen Group in the sub-4 metre SUV segment. The cut in GST rates on petrol cars could also help raise demand for such vehicles. How the new SUV will compete with the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and other compact SUVs will become clear only once its price, features and name are announced.

The launch is expected in 2027, but the company has not yet announced the exact date, name or official mileage.
