A Venezuelan national living illegally in the US was arrested near the White House with three guns and ammunition in a stolen vehicle, officials said.
A Venezuelan national has been arrested from a heavily secured area near the White House in Washington DC on charges of plotting to kill President Donald Trump. The US Secret Service and other security agencies took the suspect into custody on Thursday night.
According to official information from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), alert Secret Service officers noticed activity in a suspicious vehicle parked near the White House on Thursday night. The officers acted immediately and searched the vehicle and the driver. The suspect has been identified as Ronny Yordrix Guanipa Chirinos.
A close inspection of the vehicle turned up three different kinds of dangerous guns and a large quantity of cartridges, which were seized. The investigation also found that the vehicle was stolen and that a complaint of its theft had already been registered at a police station. Security agencies are now questioning closely how the man reached the White House's doorstep with so much ammunition and weapons in a stolen vehicle.
During questioning, Chirinos told the officers something that surprised even the investigators. He said that for the past few days he had been hearing strange, unfamiliar voices in his head. According to him, the voices were instructing him to go to Washington and kill President Donald Trump.
The claim is now being examined from two angles: one of mental distress, the other of a hidden agenda. After his statement, the suspect has been handed over to the US Marshals Service for medical and psychiatric examination and for further legal action.
According to the DHS, Chirinos is a Venezuelan citizen who was living in the US without legal permission. It has been stated that he entered the country illegally across the Texas border in March 2024. That a man living illegally in the country reached the residence of its most senior leader with weapons has raised serious questions about immigration policy and border security.
Donald Trump and his family have received death threats several times before and there have been attempts to attack them. The threat to his security has grown since he became president again. Security in the White House area has been tightened further after this incident. The White House has not so far issued any official political statement on the matter, but security agencies have appealed to the public to contact them immediately with any information.
