Democrats' stronger position in Congress puts President Donald Trump under political pressure, though after the election he said he is ready to work with them.

The tussle for power in US politics appears to be taking a new turn. With Democrats gaining ground in Congress, President Donald Trump faces a political challenge. Anticipating that the opposition could obstruct government decisions, Trump had warned earlier that he would stop every bill by vetoing it. After the election, however, he has also expressed readiness to work with the Democrats.

Trump had said plainly that if the Democrats won a majority in Congress, he would not let bills opposing his government's policies pass. In an interview, he had said that if the Republican Party lost, he would use the veto on every bill.

In this context, Trump had called himself "Mr Veto". He had also outlined a strategy: reject bills for the first few months, and then bring opponents to the negotiating table. For this reason, it is believed that confrontation between the White House and Congress could grow in the coming days.

With Democrats gaining a stronger hand in both houses of Congress, the opposition will have a chance to rein in the policies of the Trump administration. On government spending, legislation and key appointments, the Democrats could put the administration in difficulty.

In particular, by approving appointments of government officials, scrutinising the administration's decisions and forcing debate on various bills, the opposition could increase pressure on the government. On the other hand, the president's veto power could become an important political weapon for Trump. But if a two-thirds majority is secured in both houses of Congress, even a presidential veto can be rendered ineffective.

Trump, who had spoken before the election of opposing every Democratic bill, took a somewhat softer stance after the results. He acknowledged that the Democrats had performed well in the election and said he was ready to work with them in the interest of the country.

Trump also said he had received calls from several leaders of the opposition party. Even so, differences between the two parties over the administration's policies are likely to persist. In the coming political climate in the US, there could therefore be a major political tug-of-war over clashes on bills, scrutiny of government decisions and the powers of the president.
