The FBI has pointed to North Korea-linked hackers over the theft of more than $6 billion from Binance, a charge Pyongyang has rejected as baseless.
The United States and North Korea have come face to face over a cyber theft at Binance, counted among the world's major cryptocurrency exchanges. It is claimed that more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency has been stolen from Binance. While the US is pointing a finger at North Korean hackers, North Korea has denied all the allegations outright.
Binance said that more than $6 billion in digital assets was stolen in the cyber theft on Friday. It is being counted among the biggest thefts ever in the cryptocurrency world. As soon as the news spread, there was a stir across the world and discussion began over who was behind the attack.
Soon afterwards, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) expressed suspicion of hackers linked to North Korea. The allegation is that the attack was carried out by a hacking group called 'TraderTraitor'. The FBI has also issued a notice making public the face of one accused in the case. The same group's name was linked last year to the big cyber attack on the Bybit exchange.
North Korea flatly refused to accept the FBI's announcement. It called it a 'petty provocation' by the US. Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un, reacted sharply to the American allegations. She alleged that whenever a major cybercrime occurs anywhere in the world, the US has a habit of linking it to North Korea. She described the FBI's announcement as a 'petty provocation' and a 'baseless statement'.
Kim Yo Jong also said the US was trying to spread misunderstanding about North Korea in the international community. She claimed the allegations had once again made clear the US's hostile attitude towards North Korea.
Following the incident, questions are being raised about Binance's security and the safety of customers' digital assets. The company has said it is arranging to make good a large part of the assets affected by the theft from its own funds.
Internationally, it has also been alleged in the past that North Korea obtains foreign currency through cryptocurrency theft and cyber crime. Some experts claim that such money is put into the country's nuclear weapons programme. For now, the truth amid the American allegation of North Korean involvement in the Binance theft and Pyongyang's denial is yet to emerge from the investigation.
