US becomes India's top LPG supplier, official calls it a proud moment
A senior US State Department official said America is now India's largest LPG supplier and cited deepening ties in defence, trade and nuclear energy.
Even as tensions persist in the global market, India-US relations have strengthened over the past year, with trade between the two countries growing steadily, especially in the energy sector. Bethany Morrison, a senior official at the US State Department, said the United States has become the largest supplier of LPG to India.
Speaking at a program at the Foreign Press Center in New York, Morrison discussed India-US relations, saying the scope of the partnership between the two countries has expanded significantly over the past year. She said India and the US are now working together across sectors including energy, defence, trade and diplomatic relations. Morrison also said India is increasing its energy supplies from various countries and sources to meet its energy needs.
In this context, the US has also emerged as a major energy supplier for India. Morrison said, "We are proud that the US is now the largest country exporting LPG to India. As India diversifies its energy sources, it is a matter of pride for us that the US has also become a supplier in that mix."
Morrison also referred to the 10-year defence framework agreement between India and the US. She said the two countries are moving forward not only in the defence sector but also in nuclear energy. She noted that India has passed the "Shanti law," reforming its nuclear energy rules for the first time in about 20 years. This is expected to further boost cooperation between India and the US in the field of civil nuclear energy.
The US official said India-US cooperation is not limited to energy and defence alone. The two countries are also working on major trade deals and cooperating on platforms such as the Quad. Morrison said the entire South Asia region is very important for the Trump administration. She said earlier, South Asia would receive special attention only when a crisis arose there due to events elsewhere in the world. She said the Trump administration considers South Asia an extremely important region of the world, and the US is now paying more attention to the region than before.
