United Nations Day is observed with great enthusiasm around the world every year on October 24. The day recalls a pivotal turning point in world history. On this date in 1945, the United Nations (UNO) formally came into being.

The world had just come through the terrible devastation of the Second World War. Losses ran into billions, thousands of innocent people had died and trust between countries had weakened. All of humanity was in distress. In these circumstances, world leaders came together and laid the foundation of the United Nations.

Its purpose was clear: that a third world war should never happen, and that differences or disputes between countries should be settled through peaceful talks rather than war. Its real reason was to lead the world out of crisis and give it a safer future.

The journey, which began with only a few countries, has now reached 193 member states across the world. The United Nations is no longer only a forum for mediating in times of war. It has also become an important platform for finding solutions to major global challenges such as eradicating poverty, climate change, gender inequality, health problems and terrorism. The organisation continually works to ensure that every person on earth gets the chance to lead a safe, dignified and just life.

On United Nations Day, a variety of events are held in all member states. These mainly include peace marches, discussions, education-related programmes, and essay or painting competitions on global issues. Through these, the younger generation is taught the importance of global peace, mutual cooperation and human rights.

At a time when tension arises between many countries, the day carries a valuable message of unity, inclusiveness and brotherhood across the world.

Alongside seeking peaceful ways to resolve international conflicts, the United Nations and its related bodies, such as UNICEF, the World Health Organization and UNESCO, also provide humanitarian aid quickly to affected countries during natural disasters or epidemics.

October 24 is therefore not merely the anniversary of an organisation. It is a day to pledge commitment to the future of humanity and to peace on earth.
