Police in Washim district have cracked down on an alleged inter-state "chaddi-baniyan" gang that broke the locks of closed houses at night and stole gold and silver jewellery and cash. The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of Washim arrested two members of the gang. The action has stirred the district, as seven house break-in cases have been solved.
Police recovered goods worth Rs 6.25 lakh from the accused. According to the information available, the gang committed thefts wearing only underwear and vests and carrying sharp weapons, which had spread considerable fear in Washim district. Given the seriousness of the matter, Superintendent of Police Nikesh Khatmode formed a team of the Local Crime Branch.
Under the supervision of LCB Police Inspector Sudhakar Ade, police searched for the accused on the basis of technical and confidential information. Babasaheb Kolhapure Shinde (27) and Sanjay Maruti Shinde (35) were then arrested. Both live in Viregaon, taluka and district Jalna. Police said another associate of theirs has also come to light.
Catching the accused was a major challenge for police, as they kept changing their hideouts and did not use mobile phones. Even so, the LCB team kept watch on the roads day and night and cleverly took them into custody on Saturday. When questioned after being taken into confidence, they confessed to the crimes.
The questioning led to the solving of cases registered in Malegaon, Risod, Ansing, Washim city, Lonar and Chikhli (Buldhana district). The action was carried out under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Nikesh Khatmode, Additional Superintendent of Police Lata Phad, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ramkrushna Pawar, LCB Police Inspector Sudhakar Ade and Malegaon police station Police Inspector Rajesh Khedkar.
It was carried out by Assistant Police Inspectors Yogesh Dhotre and Pandurang Ingle and police personnel Gajanan Jhagre, Ashish Bidwe, Amol Irtakar, Deepak Ghuge, Santosh Wap, Ashok Kothule and Sunil Tayde.
Of the solved cases, in two cases of Malegaon police station, 41 grams of gold and silver jewellery were recovered from the stolen goods. The total recovery is worth Rs 6.25 lakh. The accused face several house break-in cases in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Further investigation is on.
