With petrol prices rising and traffic adding to commuters' woes, many people are looking for a two-wheeler that is light on the pocket, light in weight and offers a good range. A common concern that keeps buyers away from electric scooters is the fear of the battery running out mid-way. TVS has launched its new electric scooter, the TVS Orbiter V1, aimed at addressing this concern, with an affordable price and a good range.

The scooter uses a BLDC hub motor with a peak power of 1.8 kW and a peak torque of 30 Nm. The company claims a top speed of 68 km per hour and a 0 to 60 km per hour acceleration time of 6.8 seconds. It comes with two riding modes and an automatic transmission. On a full charge, the scooter has a claimed range of 86 km.

The scooter is also well equipped on features. It gets a digital LCD cluster display, and connectivity is supported through the TVS Connect app and Bluetooth. It offers turn-by-turn navigation, call alerts, SMS alerts, vehicle health alerts, live location tracking and geo-fencing, along with over-the-air (OTA) updates. For daily use, it also includes a USB charging port, a distance-to-empty indicator, a low-battery indicator, a key shutter lock and a carry hook for luggage.

The scooter is built on a lightweight but sturdy Urban Agile chassis. It gets telescopic suspension at the front and dual shock absorbers at the rear. For safety, it comes with drum brakes on both wheels along with a combined braking system (CBS). It rides on alloy wheels, with a front tyre size of 90/80-14 inches and a rear tyre size of 90/90-12 inches.

The scooter is powered by a 1.8kWh battery, and the company has introduced a Battery as a Service (BaaS) programme for it, under which the battery has to be rented separately. Under this BaaS programme, the scooter's starting ex-showroom price comes to just Rs 49,999.

For customers who want to buy the complete scooter with the battery included in the standard version, the ex-showroom price of the standard model ranges between Rs 84,500 and Rs 1,00,650.
