Pia Dandiya, Suhas Subramanyam and Aruna Miller won their races in the US midterms, held on November 3, among 11 prominent Indian-origin candidates.

Results of the US midterm elections are coming in, and leaders of Indian origin have put up a strong showing. Voting was held on November 3, and in the results declared today voters have again placed their trust in Indian-American candidates. A total of 11 prominent Indian-origin leaders were in the fray this time, of whom Pia Dandiya, Suhas Subramanyam and Aruna Miller recorded impressive wins in their respective areas.

Democratic Party's Pia Dandiya won the US House of Representatives election from Florida's 22nd Congressional District. She defeated Republican Party's former Marine Casey Askar. Dandiya got 51.9 per cent of the votes. Her parents had moved to the US from India. Before entering politics, she did significant work in the field of education and tried to change children's lives as a high school principal.

From Virginia's 10th District, the Democratic Party's Suhas Subramanyam was re-elected and retained his seat. He is already known as the first Indian-American elected to the US Congress. He has earlier also served as an adviser to former President Barack Obama.

In Maryland, Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller won another term by defeating Republican candidate Rob Cropp. Democratic Governor Wes Moore is also projected to win again. Born in Hyderabad, Aruna Miller is the first Indian-American woman to become Maryland's Lieutenant Governor.

Midterm elections carry particular importance in American politics. This time both major parties, the Democrats and the Republicans, fielded several candidates of Indian origin. These leaders were in the race for posts ranging from members of Congress, governors and lieutenant governors to city mayors.

There were several other faces in the contest. Ro Khanna is contesting from Silicon Valley's 17th District and Pramila Jayapal from Washington's 7th District. Dr Ami Bera is a candidate from California's 3rd District and Dr Amish Shah from Arizona's 1st District. Pooja Sethi and Sandeep Srivastava are in the fray in Texas, Nithya Raman for Mayor of Los Angeles and Sarita Komatireddy for New York Attorney General.

Most attention in the entire election is on Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy in the race for Ohio governor. President Donald Trump himself campaigned for Ramaswamy. After the presidential primary, Trump had appointed him to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but in his desire to become Ohio's governor, Ramaswamy has put all his strength into this election.

These results make it clear that the influence of Indian-Americans on American society and policy-making is growing rapidly. After making a name in education, law, medicine and business, a new generation of people of Indian origin is now establishing its hold in mainstream American politics. There is no doubt that in the coming time these leaders will play an important role in further strengthening ties between the US and India.
