Thieves target farm pumps, cables and pomegranates in western Indapur, farmers worried
Thefts of pump motors and electric cables have risen along the Neera river in western Indapur taluka, and farmers want police to step up night patrols.
Thefts of farm pump motors and electric cables have risen sharply over the past few days in the area along the Neera river in the western part of Indapur taluka. Farmers are living in fear and worry. Cases of motor and cable theft are being reported repeatedly from Jamb and the surrounding area.
Farmers were already in difficulty this year because the rains failed. The thieves are now causing them further heavy financial loss. With motors and cables, which are essential for farming, stolen, water to the crops has stopped completely.
Jamb falls under the Walchandnagar police station limits and is a large village in the area. Thieves took advantage of the darkness of night to steal the expensive copper wire of farm pumps belonging to about 20 to 25 farmers, including Dilip Kavale, Vishwas Patil, Namdevrao Rupanwar, Bapurao Mankar and Chavan. After this incident, several more cases of cable and motor theft have been reported in the Jamb area.
A few days ago, unidentified thieves also stole pomegranates worth lakhs of rupees overnight from the orchard of a small landholder in nearby Nirwangi. People still remember that incident. Farmers are thoroughly distressed by the string of thefts.
Farmers in the area are strongly demanding that these repeated thefts be stopped. They say Walchandnagar police should step up night patrols in the villages and put a permanent end to the thieves. They also want the stolen motors and cables traced immediately and strict action taken against the culprits.
