Thieves steal 118 sovereigns of gold from social media influencer's home in Kanyakumari
Gold jewellery worth about Rs 1 crore was stolen from an influencer's house near Nagercoil after she frequently posted videos flaunting her gold purchases.
Thieves broke into the home of a social media influencer in the VIP Garden Colony in the Dhamdhu Konam area near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district and stole about 118 sovereigns of gold jewellery. The influencer, Madhumita, lives in the house with her husband Vinodkumar and their son.
Madhumita regularly posted videos on social media wearing jewellery. She also mentioned in her videos that she bought gold every month, which meant many people already knew that a large quantity of gold was kept in her house.
A preliminary investigation found that Madhumita had gone out of the house for shopping a few days ago. When she was delayed in returning, the thieves took advantage of her absence, broke open the back door of the house and entered.
When Madhumita returned home and went to her secret room, she found that the gold jewellery kept there was missing. It is reported that the thieves stole about 118 to 120 sovereigns, or roughly 944 to 960 grams, of gold jewellery along with some cash. According to initial information, the value of the stolen items is estimated at around Rs 1 crore.
Madhumita has filed a complaint at the Rajakkamangalam police station. Police have since visited the scene and begun an investigation, and a special team has been formed to probe the case.
In her social media videos, Madhumita had also shared details of her jewellery. In one video, she reportedly said she had four gold plates, a 15-pound gold chain and another gold plate weighing around 40 pounds. She also used to tell her followers, "I buy gold every month, you should too."
Keeping this in mind, police are investigating whether the thieves obtained information about the jewellery in the house from Madhumita's social media posts, and whether they had also tracked when she stepped out of the house to buy gold. Rajakkamangalam police are searching for the thieves based on CCTV footage, mobile records and other technical evidence.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for caution while sharing personal information, details of valuables kept at home, timings of being away, or information about jewellery on social media.
