Thar Roxx, Thar and Scorpio-N: which Mahindra SUV suits your family
Mahindra's Thar, Thar Roxx and Scorpio-N differ in doors, seats and boot space, making each suited to a different kind of family use
Mahindra positions the Thar, Thar Roxx and Scorpio-N differently within its SUV lineup. The recently launched 3-door Thar starts at Rs 10.32 lakh, while the 5-door Thar Roxx is priced from Rs 12.52 lakh. The Scorpio-N offers 6 or 7 seat options, setting it apart from the other two for larger families.
The Thar is a 4-seater, 3-door SUV built with adventure and off-roading in mind. It gets updates such as a new M_Glyde 4G platform, rear Panhard-link suspension, electric power steering and an electronic locking differential. Engine options include a 2.0-litre petrol as well as 1.5-litre and 2.2-litre diesel units. For a family of four wanting weekend trips, hilly routes or off-roading, the Thar's compact size can work well. However, being a 3-door, access to the rear seat and limited boot space can be a drawback for everyday family use.
The Thar Roxx has 5 doors and 5 seats. It offers 447 litres of boot space, more cabin room and better rear seating, making it a more practical SUV for commuting, family use and long highway trips. It is offered with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel engine, with 4WD available on the diesel. The 4WD version gets an electronic locking differential and multiple terrain modes, meaning its off-road capability is not compromised despite being a family SUV.
The Scorpio-N is a 6 or 7-seater SUV, making its extra seating capacity important for families with more than 5 members. With the third row folded, its boot space is stated to be up to 786 litres. Its larger body is suited to family trips, long highway drives and carrying more luggage. The top variant offers features such as a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, 12-speaker Sony audio, dual-zone climate control and Level 2 ADAS.
For families needing 5 seats with daily use and some adventure, the 5-door Thar Roxx is worth considering. Those needing 6 or 7 passenger capacity and more luggage space regularly will find the Scorpio-N's extra seating useful. A family of 4 wanting off-roading and a compact 3-door SUV experience will find the Thar suited to that different use case. Mahindra positions all three models for these distinct requirements.
