Thane sub-inspector on patrol dies after attack during Ganeshotsav bandobast
Sub-inspector Kisan Bhoir, 56, died after being attacked with a bamboo stick while on night patrol in Thane; a man with a prior record has been detained.
A police officer on night patrol in the Subhashnagar area of Thane was attacked on Thursday night, in an incident that has shaken the Thane police force. Kisan Bhoir, 56, sub-inspector at Chitalsar police station, was critically injured in the attack and died before treatment could begin.
Special police bandobast had been deployed in the city for Ganeshotsav. As part of extra police teams posted in station limits for crowd and security management during the festival, Bhoir was on night patrol with colleagues in police vehicle PCR-1 within the limits of Chitalsar police station. The attack took place while the police team was patrolling the Gandhinagar and Subhashnagar areas near Pokhran Road No. 2.
According to preliminary information given by police, the accused, Raju Valmiki, 30, who has a prior criminal record, allegedly attacked Bhoir from behind with a bamboo stick. Police said the accused had earlier cases registered against him. Bhoir suffered a severe blow to the head in the attack. He was in police uniform and on duty at the time of the attack. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him dead before treatment could begin. Senior police officers reached the spot on receiving information and inspected the scene.
According to Chitalsar police, the accused, Raju Valmiki, has been taken into custody. Police said the process of registering a murder case against the accused is underway.
Meanwhile, the exact reason for the attack on the sub-inspector is not yet clear. Police are investigating why the accused attacked him, what exactly happened at the time, and whether anyone else was involved in the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police Prashant Kadam and Senior Police Inspector Sunil Varude, along with other senior officers, also visited the spot and inspected it. The police investigation is continuing based on the situation in the area and available evidence. The death of a police officer while on duty has caused grief within the police force.
