The contest in the sedan segment has become tighter. Tata Motors has launched its new car, the Tata Aeris, which replaces the Tigor. Alongside the Dzire, Amaze and Aura, buyers now have a strong option from Tata as well.

The Tata Aeris starts at an ex-showroom price of Rs 5.29 lakh. The Honda Amaze starts at Rs 7.65 lakh, which makes the Aeris considerably cheaper. For those planning to buy one of the two, a comparison of price, engine, features and size follows.

The Aeris comes in five variants: Smart, Pure, Pure+, Creative and Accomplished. The petrol variant starts at Rs 5.29 lakh. The CNG variant starts at Rs 6.29 lakh. The top CNG AMT Accomplished variant goes up to Rs 9.74 lakh.

The Honda Amaze comes in three trims: V, VX and ZX. The V MT is priced at Rs 7.65 lakh and the V CVT at Rs 8.70 lakh. The VX MT costs Rs 8.65 lakh and the VX CVT Rs 9.40 lakh. The top ZX MT is priced at Rs 9.39 lakh, while the ZX CVT starts at Rs 9.99 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom and may vary by colour.

On size, both sedans are of equal length at 3,995 mm, but differ in other dimensions. The Aeris is 1,684 mm wide and 1,532 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,450 mm. The Amaze is 1,733 mm wide and 1,500 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,470 mm. The Amaze is thus 49 mm wider than the Aeris and its wheelbase is 20 mm longer. The Amaze has a ground clearance of 172 mm, against 170 mm for the Aeris. The Aeris is slightly ahead in luggage space, with a 419-litre boot against 416 litres in the Amaze.

The Tata Aeris has a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 85 hp and 113 Nm of torque. It is offered with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The Aeris is also available with a company-fitted CNG option.

The Honda Amaze also has a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, but it is a 4-cylinder unit. It produces 88.76 hp and 110 Nm of torque, and comes with a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox. However, the Amaze's standard range has no company-fitted CNG option.

On features, the new Tata Aeris has a large 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The top variant also gets a 360-degree camera. A digital instrument display and rear AC vents are also provided. The Honda Amaze, on the other hand, has an 8-inch screen. In wireless smartphone connectivity, wireless charging and automatic climate control, the two cars are closely matched.

On safety, both cars have 6 airbags and ABS with EBD as standard. The Amaze is ahead in driver assistance, however. Its top variant gets an ADAS system called Honda Sensing, which includes advanced safety features such as adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking and lane-keeping assist.
