Today, October 3, is the birth anniversary of Swami Ramanand Teerth. He was a prominent freedom fighter, leader and social reformer of the Hyderabad liberation movement. He was born on October 3, 1903, at Limgaon in Uttar Pradesh, but chose Marathwada as his field of work.

He inspired the people of the Hyderabad state to fight the oppressive rule of the Nizam. Under his leadership, the Hyderabad State Congress played a key role in the state's merger. After Independence he became a Member of Parliament and continued to contribute in political and social life. He died on January 22, 1972. His ideas have had a major influence on the educational development of Marathwada.

Indian writer and politician Mylapore Ponnusamy Sivagnanam died in 1995, Sony Corporation founder Akio Morita in 1999, and Indian journalist and writer M. N. Vijayan in 2007. Kedarnath Sahni, former Governor of Sikkim and Mayor of Delhi, died in 2012.
