The BSE and NSE will hold a special Diwali session on November 8, with the main Muhurat trading window running from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm.
Stock markets are normally shut on Sundays, but on November 8, 2026, they will open for Diwali. The new Hindu financial year, Samvat 2083, begins on this day, and the country's major exchanges have scheduled a special Muhurat trading session for it.
The Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange have decided to hold the special session for the convenience of investors. The main Muhurat trading session will run from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm. Any buying or selling will have to be done within this window.
The schedule for the day is as follows. The pre-open session will be held from 2:05 pm to 2:20 pm. The main Muhurat trading session will run from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm. The closing session will run from 3:30 pm to 3:50 pm, while the closing session (CAS) will be held from 3:35 pm to 3:50 pm. The post-closing session is set for 3:50 pm to 4:00 pm.
Muhurat means an auspicious time. Since olden days, Indian traders and bullion dealers have begun their business on Diwali by worshipping the account books for the new year. Times have changed, but the custom has carried over to the stock market. The tradition has been observed on Dalal Street for many years.
People believe that an investment made on this day brings prosperity and success. The trades in this hour-long session are not seen as being only about making profit. They are also a psychological and cultural way of praying for economic stability, progress and the continued grace of Lakshmi in the coming year.
The session draws everyone from small retail investors to large institutional investors from India and abroad. Many people keep up the tradition by investing very small sums. Many also consider it auspicious to buy just one share on this day.
Investors should also watch the market holidays in November. On November 10, for Balipratipada (Diwali Padwa), the market will be closed for regular trading. The market will also not function on November 24, for Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Prakash Gurpurab.
The advice for those investing on Muhurat day is to understand the technical aspects of the market and make a sound decision. Do not buy a share merely because the day is considered auspicious. Put money only in a company you trust and have researched. Many people start a SIP or buy one share of a good company on this day as a fresh beginning.
