The Sensex rose 2.60 per cent and the Nifty 2.40 per cent on Thursday, helped by global cues, heavy foreign buying and a fall in crude oil prices.

Mumbai: Indian stock markets rallied sharply on Thursday, November 5, 2026, rising for the sixth consecutive session. At the close, the Sensex was up 2,008.61 points, or 2.60 per cent, at 79,310.01. The Nifty gained 576 points, or 2.40 per cent, to reach 24,536.60.

The market was supported by three factors: positive signals from global markets, strong buying by foreign investors and a fall in crude oil prices.

Nearly every sector gained today. In all, 2,775 shares advanced, 1,329 ended lower and 147 were unchanged. Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance, IndiGo, Maruti Suzuki and ICICI Bank were among the top gainers on the Nifty. Apollo Hospitals, ONGC, NTPC, Bharat Electronics and Coal India were among the losers.

By sector, the auto, PSU bank, Nifty Bank and private bank indices rose about 3 per cent. The IT and consumer durables indices also gained more than 2 per cent. The Nifty Midcap index closed 1.8 per cent higher and the smallcap index 0.6 per cent higher. The energy index fell 0.5 per cent and the media index 0.8 per cent.

There was good news from the United States as well, where political uncertainty is said to have eased after the Democrats' big win in the midterm elections. This lifted investor confidence and US markets rose sharply. The Dow Jones gained 3.03 per cent, the S&P 500 1.58 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite 1.44 per cent. In Asia, Shanghai's SSE Composite and Hong Kong's Hang Seng were trading higher. These signals were reflected in the Indian market.

Crude oil fell for the fourth day in a row. Brent crude slipped 1.07 per cent to $93.61 a barrel, while US WTI crude dropped 1.29 per cent to $86.98 a barrel. In the previous session, both benchmarks had fallen more than 8 per cent. Crude has become about 16 per cent cheaper so far this week. Hopes of a resolution to the confrontation between the United States and Iran have weighed on oil prices. This is seen as a relief for India, as it could help lower import costs and inflation. There is also scope for a positive effect on company profits.

Buying by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) also strengthened the market. On Thursday they bought shares worth Rs 7,284 crore in the Indian market. Foreign investors have been buyers for the fourth consecutive session. It is one of their biggest single-day purchases in India since October 2025.

Overall, the rally in global markets, the fall in crude oil and growing confidence among foreign investors lifted the Sensex and the Nifty. Investors' attention now turns to the next trading session.
