The world of space exploration is set to see new history today. SpaceX, the company of industrialist Elon Musk, has its most powerful and largest rocket, Starship, ready for its 14th test flight. The historic launch is scheduled for today, Monday, September 28, with the whole world watching. A 75-minute launch window opens at 5:45 pm Indian time (7:15 am Central Time). The flight is being seen as the most significant in SpaceX's history because Starship will, for the first time, enter Earth's orbit directly and complete a full orbital flight.

In all previous test flights, Starship was sent on a sub-orbital path, below full orbit, to keep the public safe while still gathering as much technical data as possible. But on this 14th launch, Starship will enter Earth's orbit directly. This step will give a big boost to the mission of making Starship quickly and repeatedly reusable. If the test succeeds, it will also strengthen SpaceX's plans to send humans to the Moon and Mars in future.

The biggest highlight of this mission is that, for the first time, 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites are being sent into space along with it. This is the most advanced satellite design yet in the Starlink network. The V3 satellites have been built specifically to significantly increase the speed and reliability of broadband and high-speed internet worldwide. Technically, compared to Starlink V2 satellites, the V3 satellites have far greater data-carrying capacity and power generation capability. Each Starlink V3 satellite supports 1 Tbps of downlink and 160 Gbps of uplink capacity, meaning downlink capacity is about 10 times higher and uplink capacity about 22 times higher than the older V2 satellites. This will make it much easier to deliver high-speed internet to remote areas as well.

After separating from Starship, the 26 Starlink V3 satellites will deploy their antennas and solar panels in space. They will then make initial contact with the main ground station on Earth as well as with other satellites in space, using radio frequency and laser links. Using onboard thrusters, they will gradually raise their orbit. Once all the initial tests are complete, the satellites will begin providing direct internet service to customers worldwide within a few weeks.

The full mission is expected to last about 10 hours, a long duration for a test flight. Starship will fly at an altitude of about 275 kilometres above Earth's surface and complete a total of 6 orbits around the Earth during these 10 hours. After the final stage, the goal is for Starship to make a controlled splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, west of Chile.

After studying the issues and data from the previous flight in depth, SpaceX engineers have made several important changes to the hardware and software for flight 14. In this mission, the main objectives for the Super Heavy booster are a successful lift-off, ascent, stage separation, boostback burn and a controlled landing burn at the landing point in the Gulf of America. The main objectives for the second stage, the Starship upper stage, include successfully reaching Earth orbit, deploying the 26 Starlink V3 satellites on schedule, performing a de-orbit burn using Raptor engines in space, and finally completing a controlled re-entry, landing and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. Three of the satellites also carry special cameras that will inspect Starship's heat shield and send back data on the ground needed for the next mission.
