Skoda Auto Volkswagen India has begun preparations to launch an updated version of the Skoda Slavia sedan in the Indian market ahead of the festive season. The company has started production of the new Slavia at its plant in Chakan, Pune. Around 80,000 units of the car have been sold since its launch, and the company says it holds about 30 percent share in its segment.

The biggest change in this update is to the engine and gearbox. The 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder TSI petrol engine will now come with a new 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, replacing the 6-speed automatic gearbox offered earlier. This is expected to make driving more comfortable both in city traffic and on long journeys.

The cabin of the new Slavia has also seen several upgrades. The rear seat now gets a massage function, considered a standout feature in this segment. It also gets a 360-degree surround view camera. The infotainment system includes an AI companion based on Google Cloud.

Depending on the variant, features include a digital instrument cluster, a larger touchscreen, connectivity features and turn-by-turn navigation. Select variants will also get electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats. For safety, the car comes with 6 airbags and more than 25 safety features. It retains its 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP.

There are also some design changes. The car gets new LED headlamps, fog lamps, updated LED taillamps and sequential turn indicators. The top-end Monte Carlo variant gets red detailing, red brake calipers and special alloy wheels.

Although production of the new Slavia has begun, Skoda has not yet released variant-wise features or official prices. Customers will be watching for the car's pricing and the features on offer in each variant at the time of launch.
