Skip the sheera this Ganesh visarjan, try moong dal kheer instead
A simple, quick moong dal kheer recipe offers a tasty alternative to the usual sheera for Ganpati visarjan
Homes usually make rava sheera as prasad for Ganpati, offering it both at the time of installation and immersion. But for those wanting to try something different this visarjan, moong dal kheer can replace the sheera. Moong dal is considered good for digestion and is usually cooked as a vegetable dish, but it also makes a tasty kheer. This recipe needs only a few ingredients commonly found at home and comes together quickly.
To make the kheer, you need half a cup of moong dal, two teaspoons of ghee for roasting the dal, one litre of full fat milk, eight to ten strands of saffron, fifty grams of milk, jaggery, ten to twelve almonds (finely chopped or coarsely crushed) and ten to twelve cashews (cut into small pieces).
To prepare it, first soak the moong dal in water for one to two hours. Once fully soaked, drain the water. Then heat two teaspoons of ghee in a pan, add the moong dal and cook it well on low flame until it becomes fragrant.
Once the dal is well cooked, add milk and keep stirring with a spoon, adding a few strands of saffron at this stage as well. Once the dal is cooked through and fine, mix in condensed milk powder available in the market. This powder helps give the kheer a sweet taste and a creamy texture.
Next, heat a thick-bottomed vessel and roast jaggery in it on low flame. Add the prepared jaggery syrup to the kheer mixture, stir and let it cook again on low flame. Once the kheer is well cooked and has thickened, add the almonds and cashews, or dry fruits of your choice, and turn off the gas. Serve the hot kheer in a bowl.
