Bangladesh's former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has said she will return to her country this December. The 79-year-old made the statement at a virtual press conference organised by a UK think tank, the Global Centre for Democratic Governance. She had to give up power and leave the country after the violent mass protests of 2024.

Hasina said her passport is currently sealed. Even so, she said, she is exploring legal routes and will announce a firm plan for her return when the time is right. She faces serious charges and several cases are under way. Despite this, she stressed that she is fully prepared to go back and face every outcome and punishment.

Several serious cases have been filed against Hasina in connection with the crackdown on protesters during the change of power. In one case, a court in Bangladesh has sentenced her to death. Hasina does not accept the verdict. She says the entire trial was carried out out of political vengeance. "The fear of arrest or jail cannot keep me away from my duty to the people of my country," she said.

The former prime minister also said her decision to return is not only about her political future. According to her, it stems from her deep bond with the people of the country. At international press conferences and interviews in July and on August 5, she had also indicated that she would return in December along with the other Awami League members.

Hasina also strongly advocated the political rights of the Awami League. She said that if true democracy is to be restored in the country, the ban on the party must be lifted immediately.

Her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and former education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel were also present at the press conference. Both spoke about the party's future strategy and political direction. Joy said the present interim government has not contacted them directly, but the party will stay true to its policies and continue the fight.

Hasina's announcement has stirred politics in Dhaka and across Asia. All eyes are now on what happens in December.
