India's sedan segment had a good September 2026, with 35,119 sedans sold during the month. The figure was 33,346 units in September 2025, which means sales were 5.3% higher this time. But not every car benefited from the rise. Sales of some models grew sharply, while demand for some well-known sedans fell.

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire was number one in the whole market, with 17,754 units sold in September 2026. The figure was 20,038 units in the same month last year, so Dzire sales fell 11.4%. Even so, it accounted for 50.6% of total sales of the top 10 sedans. Notably, Dzire sales were higher than the combined sales of the other nine models.

The Hyundai Aura was second, with sales up 39.8% to 7,530 units. The Honda Amaze also performed well, selling 3,286 units, a rise of 25.9%. Together, these three compact sedans accounted for more than 81% of total sales of the top 10 models.

The Tata Aris came fourth, with 2,406 units sold. It is a new model, and its sales helped keep the overall growth of the sedan segment positive. Excluding the Aris, the combined sales of the other nine models were 32,713 units, which is lower than last year.

Among midsize sedans, the Volkswagen Virtus led with 1,172 units, but its sales fell 28.9%. The Hyundai Verna sold 762 units and the Honda City 574. The Skoda Slavia saw the steepest fall, down 47.1% to 709 units. Sales of the Tata Tigor also fell 29% to 686 units.

Among premium sedans, the Toyota Camry sold 240 units. Its sales rose 75.2%, the biggest percentage gain in the top 10, though the actual sales figure remained quite small.

The September figures show that affordable compact sedans are still much liked in the Indian market, while midsize sedans are struggling to hold their sales. Price, features and changing customer preferences will matter for carmakers going forward.
