In Kolhapur, where western Maharashtra was watching the counting of votes for the Gokul milk union, the Rajarshi Shahu Kisan alliance led by MLA Satej Patil has taken a big lead. Of the 25 seats, Patil's panel is ahead on 14, touching the majority "magic figure".
The candidates of the ruling Mahayuti are ahead on only 11 seats for now. The election to the Gokul milk producers' union in Kolhapur has been a talking point across the state. Voting had already taken place, and counting is under way today.
Satej Patil and Minister Hasan Mushrif had put in their full strength to win the election. Both alliances were determined to take control of Gokul at any cost.
The results have not been good for the Mahayuti. All three of its former chairmen, Arun Dongle, Navid Mushrif and Vishwas Patil, have lost.
Workers have begun celebrating outside Satej Patil's office in Kolhapur. They are bursting firecrackers and throwing gulal to mark the victory. The like-minded alliance led by Satej Patil is moving towards forming the administration at Gokul, and only the formality of the win remains.
The election was fought directly between Satej Patil and the Mahayuti, so the whole state was watching the outcome. The panel's success has opened the way for it to take power at Gokul. Workers are visibly jubilant, and the win is being seen as a sign of Satej Patil's political strength.
