Police in Chhattisgarh have seized Rs 4 crore in cash from a pickup truck that was travelling from Raipur towards Nagpur. The notes were concealed in a purpose-built chamber at the back of the vehicle. Two men who were in the truck have been detained and are being questioned.

The police had been tipped off that a large sum of money was being moved to Nagpur in a white Bolero Maxx pickup. Acting on that information, a team stopped the vehicle at about 11 pm on Monday in the Dabrapara area, also written as Dabar Para, which comes under the Khursipar police station limits.

Officers became suspicious while carrying out the first check and then went through the truck more carefully. That search revealed a hidden compartment in the rear of the pickup. When it was opened, bundles of Indian currency were found inside. After the notes were counted, the total came to Rs 4 crore.

The police have impounded the pickup and kept both occupants in custody. Investigators are asking them where the money came from, who owns it, where it was meant to be delivered and why such a big amount was being carried in a concealed space.

Officials are said to be completing the legal formalities in the case. An inquiry into the financial source of the seized cash has begun, and the Income Tax Department is being informed so that it can examine the matter further.

The case is being treated as significant because of its Nagpur link, and the size of the sum has drawn the attention of investigating agencies. Police say the owner of the cash, where it came from and whether any law was broken can be established only when the investigation is complete.
