Road dispute turns deadly in Satara's Helgaon, one killed in axe attack
A 28-year-old man was killed and several others injured after an old road dispute between two groups turned violent with axes and sticks in Karad taluka
An old road dispute in Helgaon village in Satara district's Karad taluka turned bloody on Sunday morning. A fierce clash broke out between two groups, in which axes, a gandasa, an iron spike and wooden sticks were used. The attack killed 28-year-old Suraj Bharat Suryavanshi, while several people from both groups were injured. One of the injured is said to be in serious condition.
The incident took place around 9:15 am on Sunday in front of Prajwal Kisan Suryavanshi's house in Helgaon. According to the complaint, Shrimant Ramchandra Suryavanshi arrived carrying an axe, Ayush Vitthal Suryavanshi with an iron spike, and Omkar Uttam Suryavanshi with a gandasa. Vitthal Ramchandra Suryavanshi and Ramchandra Mahadev Suryavanshi arrived with wooden sticks. It is alleged that the group hurled abuses and threatened to kill.
According to the other group's complaint, Suraj Bharat Suryavanshi was attacked as he entered the house through a bathroom next to it. It is also alleged that those who went to intervene and stop the fight were attacked with axes, a gandasa, sticks and stones. According to police records, Prajwal Kisan Suryavanshi, Saurabh Bharat Suryavanshi, Yash Shashikant Suryavanshi, Rekha Shashikant Suryavanshi and Rohini Bharat Suryavanshi were injured in the clash.
Suraj Bharat Suryavanshi died in the same attack. Two people from the other side were also injured, one of whom is said to be in serious condition. Police investigation will clarify the role these injured persons played in the incident.
A team from Masur police station reached the spot as soon as news of the incident broke. Heavy police deployment has been put in place in the village, and a dog squad was also called to the scene. Sub-divisional police officer Rajashree Patil went to Masur police station to take stock of the incident. The case is being further investigated by Adinath Kharat, assistant police inspector at Masur police station. Ten people, including women, have been booked under various sections including murder in the case. Tension prevails in Helgaon following the incident.
According to police, a dispute had broken out on Saturday night among members of the same family over the road, and a complaint had been filed with police. At the time, police had called both sides and counselled them. However, the dispute flared up again on Sunday morning and turned into a violent clash, in which a young man lost his life. After an in-camera post-mortem, Suraj's body was brought to Helgaon, where it was cremated late at night amid an atmosphere of mourning.
