A hectic lifestyle, poor eating habits, a lack of nutrients and too little sleep soon begin to show on the body, so ignoring changes in it can prove dangerous. After the age of 40 to 50, uric acid in the body starts rising quickly. It is a waste product for the body and gradually begins to cause trouble.

When uric acid rises, the pain is often worst near the big toe, and even putting a foot on the floor after getting up in the morning feels uncomfortable. When uric acid levels rise in the joints, few symptoms show in the early days, but after some time very severe pain sets in.

The symptoms of high uric acid include sudden, sharp pain in the big toe; pain in the joints of the ankle, knee, elbow or wrist; a burning sensation while urinating; persistent nausea and vomiting; and tiredness and weakness. If the urine turns cloudy or there is blood in it, such symptoms should not be ignored at all, and treatment should be sought in time.

To bring down raised uric acid, it is very important to drink 2 to 3 litres of water every day. Drinking water helps flush toxins out of the body. Once more uric acid leaves the body, swelling in the joints will also reduce.

Processed foods, preservatives, yeast-based items, packaged cold drinks sold in the market and fructose should be left out of the diet entirely. These items carry a higher chance of harming the body.

A variety of vegetables is eaten in daily meals, but okra, cabbage and brinjal should not be eaten in large quantities. Eat leafy vegetables and vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin C instead. Eating citrus fruits helps lower uric acid. Eating milk, ghee and other dairy products in the right quantity is good for the body. Taking more fibre-rich foods also keeps digestion healthy.
