Renault has launched its new Duster Strong Hybrid in the Indian car market. The introductory starting ex-showroom price of the SUV is Rs 16.99 lakh. The company claims the hybrid SUV returns a mileage of 29 kmpl. The car runs on a petrol engine and electric motors and does not need to be charged from outside, so it could be a good option for customers who want the experience of electric driving.
The Duster Strong Hybrid comes in three variants. The Evolution variant starts at Rs 16.99 lakh, the Techno is priced at Rs 18.99 lakh and the Emotion variant at Rs 19.49 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom. These introductory prices will apply to vehicles delivered by December 31, 2026.
The SUV is fitted with Renault's E-Tech 160 strong hybrid technology, comprising a 1.8-litre petrol engine, two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery. The total maximum power of the system is 157.8 hp, while the electric motors have a peak torque of 208 Nm. It has a multi-mode automatic transmission. With two electric and four petrol gear ratios, the system can work in 15 different combinations depending on driving conditions.
The technology could be especially useful in city traffic. According to the company's claim, 80% of city driving can be on electric power under the right conditions. The battery is charged during braking and deceleration, and the petrol engine can also add to its charge. The E-Save mode allows battery energy to be kept in reserve for the later part of a journey.
On performance, Renault claims the Duster Hybrid reaches 100 kmph from a standstill in 9.61 seconds, while going from 80 to 120 kmph takes 10.6 seconds. These figures were recorded with the air-conditioning switched off. The suspension has been specially tuned for a comfortable ride on poor roads, and the battery has a separate thermal management system.
The company is offering a warranty on the battery of 8 years or 1.6 lakh km. The SUV can be booked for Rs 21,000 on the official website or at dealerships. The first customer deliveries will begin on November 6, and R-Pass holders will get priority in deliveries. The company has said the 29 kmpl mileage is ARAI-certified, but actual mileage can vary with driving conditions, traffic and driving style.
