Pune: The weather is turning. The southwest monsoon has begun its return journey, yet the intensity of rain across the country has not eased. Five cyclonic circulation systems are currently active across the country. Under their influence, several states are likely to see rain and squally weather over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department has warned of winds at 50 to 60 km per hour in some areas.

Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka may get rain over the next few days. In some places heavy rain will be accompanied by thunder and lightning. Heavy rain is also expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Winds of 40 to 50 km per hour may blow in some areas.

Light to scattered rain is forecast at some places in Konkan, Goa, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada and Gujarat between September 29 and October 1. Parts of the state may thus continue to see some rain.

Meanwhile, the monsoon has started retreating. Parts of northwest India are likely to turn dry from the end of September. However, because of the active weather systems, spells of rain will continue in different parts of the country from time to time.

Western disturbances are affecting north India. As a result, snowfall is occurring in the hill areas from Jammu and Kashmir to Uttarakhand, while the plains are seeing torrential rain. Temperatures have fallen by 10 degrees. The Kedarnath yatra has been suspended for the second consecutive day because of landslides. Heavy rain with thunder is currently forecast in nine states.

On Tuesday, more than nine states in northwest and east India are likely to see thunderstorms, rain and squally showers. Relief is expected from Wednesday, but humidity may rise. Heavy rain is forecast in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan.
