Residents of Pune are struggling because of unfinished flyovers. The works were delayed for various reasons, and the people of Pune are bearing the brunt. The Pune Municipal Corporation administration claims the works will be completed in the new year and traffic will move smoothly.

To ease congestion in the city, the corporation has taken up several projects. These include flyovers, railway overbridges, river bridges and connectivity link ramps. It is claimed that five of them have reached the final stage. The works could not be completed on schedule.

The corporation is building flyovers, bridges over the Mula-Mutha river and ramps in areas such as Koregaon Park, the Camp area, Kalyani Nagar, Karve Nagar, Baner and Ghorpadi. As a result, roads are closed at most places and traffic has been diverted at some. Commuters have to take long detours to reach their destinations, and many are getting stuck in traffic jams.

The Sadhu Vaswani overbridge across the railway line, which connects Pune station, the Camp area, Koregaon Park, Yerawada and Nagar Road, is being demolished and rebuilt. The bridge had become old, and the decision to demolish and rebuild it was taken in 2023. The railway administration had raised technical issues, and the rehabilitation of local residents was also pending. The work of placing the open web girders for the bridge is in the final stage and will be completed by December.

The corporation is building a connectivity link ramp (grade separator) joining the Pashan and Sus flyovers to the service road of the Bengaluru highway (NH 48). Traffic will move smoothly once the service road work under the relevant development plan is completed. Vehicles heading towards Mumbai from Pashan-Sus Road and those going towards Chandni Chowk are also likely to get a ramp to enter the highway in the new year.

The Sun City bridge over the Mutha river, linking Narveer Tanaji Malusare Road (Sinhagad Road) and Karve Nagar, will prove important. The corporation has taken up work on this bridge. The connecting road on the Karve Nagar side has been built, while work on the road on the Sun City side is under way.

The corporation is building a flyover on the railway line near the Miraj line in Ghorpadi. Work on this bridge has been going on for two to two and a half years. Once it is completed, people in the Camp area, Ghorpadi, Mundhwa, Koregaon Park, Kharadi and Pune station will get relief from the daily jams at the railway gate. Ninety per cent of the work on this bridge is done. Asphalting, painting, shifting of service lines and installation of traffic signs are currently in progress. These works will be completed by October-November.

According to Dinkar Gojare, head of the special projects department of the corporation, work on flyovers, river bridges and ramps is going on in different parts of the city. Flyovers and river bridges at four to five locations will be completed by the end of December. These bridges will open to traffic in the new year, while work on one bridge will be completed in March 2027. This will help resolve the problem of traffic jams.
