The traffic jam at Ganpati Ghat, in the Mahaganapati temple area of Wai town, is getting worse by the day. Local residents complain that a private parking arrangement in the space in front of the temple causes them needless trouble. Residents and devotees alike have been put to inconvenience.

A vehicle must first be issued a receipt before it can enter the parking area. Until that process is complete, vehicles stand on the road and a queue forms. Traffic is thrown into disarray, a sight seen repeatedly in the area.

The area in front of the Mahaganapati temple is one of the busiest parts of Wai. When vehicles crowd the roadside, the jam turns serious within a short time. Residents demand that, if private parking is holding up traffic on a public road, the municipal council should inspect the arrangement urgently and take legal action if anything is found to be irregular.

Home Guards have been deployed in the area to control traffic. However, there are complaints that drivers do not follow their instructions as expected. As a result, vehicles are parked haphazardly and the road is soon jammed. It is being said that posting Home Guards alone will not solve the problem, and that traffic planning, parking discipline and effective enforcement of rules are needed.

As a permanent solution, the demand is now growing that the municipal council build official parking by making planned use of the available space in the river area. If this is done, the load of vehicles on the main road would ease, traffic around the temple would move smoothly, and the council could also get a source of income from official parking fees.

Mahaganapati is the focal point of Wai's tourism and religious heritage. If residents face parking problems and jams in this very area, it is time for the administration to take the matter seriously. If private parking is disrupting public traffic, responsibility needs to be fixed.

Residents feel the municipal council, the police administration and the agencies concerned should jointly inspect the area and take firm decisions on regulating parking, controlling traffic and providing alternative parking. Otherwise, local residents fear, the grip of the jam at Mahaganapati Ghat is likely to tighten day by day.
