Six Alang shipbreaking yard workers killed as Bolero rams parked trailer near Trapaj in Bhavnagar

Six people were killed in a road accident in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district in the early hours of Tuesday. A speeding Bolero slammed into the rear of a trailer parked by the roadside near Trapaj on the Bhavnagar-Talaja-Somnath highway. All six occupants died on the spot, and one person was critically injured.

The impact was so severe that the Bolero was completely wrecked. Preliminary inquiries show that all the victims were employees of the Alang shipbreaking yard. According to initial information, the accident took place on Tuesday morning near Trapaj village. The Bolero was travelling at high speed and ran into the back of the parked trailer. Traffic on the highway was held up for some time afterwards.

The dead were initially identified as Vijaybhai, Sadhubhai, Jigneshbhai, Bhargavbhai, Hirenbhai and Yogeshbhai. They are said to have worked at two different plots of the Alang shipbreaking yard. It has also been said that one of the dead was the manager of a plot.

Jayeshbhai was critically injured in the accident. Local residents and police began relief work immediately and admitted him to the government hospital in Bhavnagar. Because of his serious condition, he is reported to have been shifted to a private hospital in the city for further treatment.

Local police reached the spot as soon as they were informed. The bodies have been sent to the government hospital for post-mortem examination. Police are trying to establish the cause of the accident. The investigation is also looking into the circumstances in which the trailer was parked by the roadside and the speed of the Bolero.

A pall of gloom has settled over the Alang shipbreaking yard area, and the families of the dead workers have been plunged into grief.
