All private hospitals and other medical institutions in Maharashtra will now have to display their treatment rates in a place where they are clearly visible to everyone. The public health department issued a government order on October 16, 2026, making this mandatory.
According to the government order, the main aim is to let patients and their relatives know the likely cost of treatment in advance, so that they can plan medical expenses properly. The department has said hospitals should display the rates of their medical services and available facilities where patients can easily see them.
The circular is based on notifications issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on October 12, 2026. Private hospitals and medical institutions registered under the Bombay Nursing Homes Registration Act, 1949, must display rates for the services and facilities listed in Schedule III of the Maharashtra Nursing Homes Rules, 2021. Under these rules, displaying the rates of clinical and hospital services at the front of the premises is a legal requirement.
The rate list must be in both Marathi and English. It must be put up at a prominent spot on the hospital premises that is clearly visible and easily accessible. If a hospital changes any of its rates, the list must be updated immediately.
To avoid complaints about bills, hospitals have been asked to give patients full information about the applicable service charges and the rates of different packages. Staff at the registration, inquiry and billing counters must give patients and their relatives the necessary information about the rate list and charges.
Hospitals that treat foreign patients who come to India on a medical visa or an Ayush visa must also clearly display the rates of the special packages applicable to those patients.
The competent authorities that register, regulate and monitor hospitals must periodically review compliance with the rate display rules. Institutions that violate the rules have been told to face the necessary administrative and legal action.
The government order also says that all district surgeons, district health officers and medical health officers of municipal corporations must pass on the circular to private hospitals and other medical institutions in their areas. They must also ensure effective implementation.
