After a serious accident involving a propylene tanker in the Manjarsumba Ghat, police sought expert advice on safety measures against a possible gas leak.
A serious vehicle accident occurred in the Kolwadi area of the Manjarsumba Ghat, according to news from Rasayani. Besides helping the injured, a second major danger had arisen. The accident involved a tanker carrying propylene gas, and there was a serious fear that gas could leak from it.
Recognising the gravity of the threat, Highway Superintendent of Police and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Superintendent of Police Rupali Darekar and Deputy Superintendent of Police Sameer Shaikh showed special alertness. They took the necessary steps immediately.
Propylene is a highly inflammable and dangerous gas. A leak from the damaged tanker could therefore have caused a major disaster. With this in mind, Superintendent of Police Rupali Darekar immediately contacted Gurunath Sathelkar of the Help Foundation in Khalapur and Dhananjay Gidh of Rasayani Mohopada.
She asked the two what precautions should be taken when a tanker carrying such a dangerous gas meets with an accident. She also sought expert advice on how to ensure the safety of people at the spot and of rescue teams, and what containment measures should be taken in case of a gas leak.
Several measures were stressed in the discussion. A safe distance should be kept from the tanker. Unnecessary crowds should not be allowed to gather at the spot. People in the vicinity should be kept away from the danger zone. Anything that could cause fire or sparks should be kept under control. The fire brigade and the disaster management machinery should be called in if needed.
Representatives of the Help Foundation, understanding the gravity of the situation, gave guidance on handling the tanker safely and on containment measures. The police took note of these suggestions and exercised the necessary caution while handling the situation at the spot.
The notable aspect of the incident was that the police identified in time the second danger that could arise after the accident. They did not limit themselves to helping the injured. Expert opinion was sought to prevent a gas leak from causing a far bigger disaster. The police alertness and the Help Foundation's guidance together proved important. The incident showed that good coordination between the administration and social organisations in a crisis certainly helps reduce the risk of a major potential accident.
