Patient's kin allegedly assault resident doctor in ICU at AIIMS Nagpur
Resident doctors' association demands action after a patient's family allegedly abused and beat a doctor inside the ICU at AIIMS Nagpur.
A resident doctor at AIIMS Nagpur has alleged that a patient's family members entered the ICU and assaulted him. The doctor said the family members entered the ICU, abused him and beat him. It is alleged that they grabbed him by the collar, pulled him down and hit him on the back.
According to information received, a 66-year-old patient was admitted to the medicine department for treatment around 9 am on Tuesday. His condition had worsened on Monday night, after which he was shifted to the ICU. When the patient developed breathing difficulty and needed to be put on a ventilator, the hospital sought the family's consent for this.
It is alleged that the angered family members abused and assaulted the resident doctor during the course of the treatment. The family reportedly gave consent for the ventilator only around 4 am. After this, the doctor on duty, acting on instructions from his seniors, was treating the patient when the angry family members allegedly abused and beat him. Hospital security guards were then called in and they removed the family members from the ICU. There was considerable commotion at the time and panic spread in the hospital.
The resident doctors' association has now demanded action against the family members involved in the assault. It is learnt that a memorandum will be submitted to the executive director of AIIMS over this demand. The association has warned that if no action is taken against the family members responsible, it will decide on the course of further protest. However, there is no indication so far of resident doctors going on strike; they have not yet decided to stop work.
