One of Hollywood's biggest media deals, the 110 billion dollar acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery by Paramount Skydance, had run into a major legal obstacle. Twelve US states, including California, had opposed the deal to try to block it. Paramount has now reached a settlement with these states, clearing the way for the major Hollywood media deal to move forward.

One of the most important terms of the settlement is the creation of separate editorial boards for CNN and CBS News. Concerns had been raised that the editorial independence of the two news networks could be affected once Paramount and Warner Bros came together. This arrangement is being put in place to preserve independence in news coverage and editorial decisions.

Under the settlement, Paramount has committed to releasing at least 30 films in theatres every year. If this number falls short of the target, a penalty of up to 30 million dollars per shortfall film could be imposed. Discussions were also held on a major investment in film and TV production in California, as well as certain conditions relating to the studio's property.

If Paramount and Warner Bros come together, major entertainment and news brands such as Warner Bros, HBO, CNN and CBS will come under the control of a single group. This is why the deal is being counted among Hollywood's biggest media transactions. The settlement with the states has removed one major legal obstacle, but opposition to the acquisition from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) remains. As a result, the deal process is not yet fully complete.
