Important information on the disposal of cases at the Nagpur Family Court has emerged under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The figures cover the period from January 1, 2024 to October 15, 2026. RTI activist Abhay Kolarkar filed the application, and the court's Public Information Officer (PIO) gave him the details.

The application sought complete year-wise data. It covered the total cases filed, cases settled by mutual consent and cases decided after regular hearings. It also asked how many applications were allowed, how many were rejected and how many remained pending during the period. The aim was to see how fast cases are being disposed of, and how heavy the workload is, in this special court that hears matrimonial disputes.

According to the figures, more than 7,300 cases are pending in the court. Even so, new cases on matrimonial disputes, maintenance and child custody continue to be filed.

On filing and disposal, 5,532 cases were filed in 2024 and 3,838 were disposed of. In 2025, 3,433 new cases were registered and 3,554 were disposed of. From January 1 to October 15, 2026, 3,512 new cases came in and 4,068 were disposed of.

On divorce by mutual consent, 2,242 couples received a decree during this period. In 2024, 877 applications were allowed and 95 were rejected. In 2025, 849 petitions were allowed and 87 were turned down. From January 1 to October 15, 2026, 516 petitions were allowed and 65 were rejected.

In maintenance cases, 590 of the 644 petitions filed in 2024 were allowed. In 2025, 826 claims were allowed against 548 new cases. Up to October 15, 2026, 747 claims were decided in favour of the applicants against 513 new petitions.

In child custody cases, 52 of the 56 applications in 2024 were allowed. All 61 applications filed in 2025 were allowed. Between January and October 2026, 60 custody petitions were allowed against 53 new cases.

As of October 15, 2026, 7,321 cases are pending at the Nagpur Family Court. Of these, 3,303 have been pending for one to three years, while 408 are five years old or older.

The court is also short of Class-II to Class-IV staff. Official figures as of October 1, 2026 show several vacant posts. Four of the 7 sanctioned posts of stenographer (Grade-I) are vacant, as are 2 of 5 posts of stenographer (Grade-III) and 5 of 17 posts of junior clerk. Posts such as superintendent, deposition writer and shirastedar are also vacant, putting considerable pressure on the court's administrative work.
