Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) did not get as much success as it needed from its drive to recover dues, but action continued in several zones on the last day of the drive. In Nehru Nagar zone, strict action was taken against a defaulter and the property was attached.

The team acted under the guidance of Assistant Commissioner Vikas Raiboley. The property has dues of Rs 55 lakh. The action did not stop despite political interference.

On Wednesday, the tax and assessment department of Nehru Nagar zone acted against the property of Pralhad Baburao Padole. Tax and other charges of Rs 55 lakh were outstanding on it. The NMC team measured the property on site and carried out seizure. Five to seven cupboards, a sofa set and other items kept on the premises were seized.

It is said that during the action, senior politicians phoned officials in an attempt to save the property from action. The officials, however, did not budge and the action was completed.

NMC has imposed a complete legal bar on the sale, purchase, transfer or mortgage of the property. The public has been strictly told not to enter into any financial transaction connected with it. An official warning board measuring 10 by 4 feet has been put up on the main part of the property. NMC has said clearly that if the owner does not pay the Rs 55 lakh in property tax dues within 21 days, the property will be put up for open auction.

During the action, the defaulter's old deception also came to light. For the past four years, whenever NMC issued a public notice of auction of the property, the owner submitted a written application saying there was no tenant on the premises. On Wednesday, NMC officials found a rent agreement and other solid evidence on the spot.

Meanwhile, in two consecutive days of action, the NMC team also received cheques worth Rs 27 lakh from traders in the Sakkardara area. The tax recovery team had acted at Sakkardara Chowk against defaulters of the "Ayurvedic College Pillar Dukandar Sangh". After police administration mediated, the traders agreed to pay the tax, and cheques totalling Rs 27 lakh were handed to NMC by 9 pm.

The entire action was carried out under the guidance of Assistant Commissioner Vikas Raiboley and led by Superintendent Shinde. Tax inspectors Sachin Meshram, Kisan Bare, Sudhir Borkar and other staff of the zone took part. The NMC administration has warned all defaulters to pay their property tax dues immediately without making excuses.
