Newborn's death at Vashi civic hospital sparks uproar; family alleges negligence by doctors
Relatives of a woman whose baby was stillborn at the Vashi municipal hospital in Navi Mumbai accused doctors of negligence, which the hospital denies.
There was a commotion at the Vashi municipal hospital in Navi Mumbai over the death of a newborn. The baby was stillborn after delivery. The woman's relatives then accused the doctors of negligence and demanded strict action against those responsible. Tension prevailed on the hospital premises for some time.
According to the information available, Laxmi Milan Das was admitted to the Vashi municipal hospital on October 1 after labour pains began. It was her first delivery. On October 4, doctors first attempted a normal delivery. Despite several attempts, the delivery could not be completed, and it was finally decided to perform an operation. The baby was born after the operation.
However, when the baby was born after the surgery, it was found dead. On learning this, the woman's relatives turned aggressive towards the hospital administration. The relatives allege that the baby died because of the doctors' negligence.
The relatives have demanded action against the doctor concerned and the staff at fault. They also said the entire matter should be investigated and the real cause of the baby's death established through the inquiry.
After the relatives' allegations, the hospital administration put forward its side. According to the hospital's medical superintendent, the baby's unfortunate death had occurred in the womb itself. The administration says the doctors were present with the patient throughout the treatment and did not run away leaving her.
With the relatives making allegations on one side and the hospital administration offering its explanation on the other, the cause of the baby's death, and whether there was medical negligence in the case, will become clear only after an inquiry.
