The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has suspended, for now, the 10 percent water cut in force across its area. The civic administration took the decision after assessing the city's water needs, the usable water stock at Morbe dam and current water consumption.

The meteorological department had forecast this year's average rainfall at 92 to 94 percent, citing El Nino and IOD projections along with the possible impact of global climate change on the Indian monsoon. As a result, the 10 percent water cut was imposed across the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area from May 2026 as a water management measure, along with a ban on using drinking water for swimming pools and ongoing construction sites.

Water connections to ongoing construction sites will now be restored, but on the condition that the water from these connections is used only for drinking by workers and staff. If drinking water is found being used for construction or any other purpose, the connection will be cut immediately and a fine imposed. Arrangements for recycling swimming pool water for maximum reuse, and preventing wastage of water, have also been made mandatory.

On September 16, 2025, the total water stock at Morbe dam was 100 percent, with usable stock at 84.40 percent. This year, on September 16, 2026, the dam's total stock stands at 91.03 percent and usable stock at 75 percent. Although the stock is lower than last year, given the current condition being reasonably satisfactory and the difficulties the 10 percent cut was causing residents, the cut has been suspended until further orders.

A full review of the usable water stock at Morbe dam will be carried out on November 30, 2026, after which water supply planning for the period ahead will be decided. The civic administration will decide whether to continue without the cut or reimpose it based on the available water stock, actual consumption and the likely water requirement until next year's monsoon. Meanwhile, the civic administration has appealed to residents to use water thoughtfully and responsibly so that water can be saved.
